Hex vom Dasenstein is a large cooperative from the Baden region of southern Germany. The cooperative is in the village of Kappelrodeck. All the growers in this village cultivate grapes for the cooperative. The name Hex vom Dasenstein means the witch of Dasenstein in German. The name comes from a local story about the daughter of the town’s nobleman. In 1356AD, she had an affair with a commoner from the village of Kappelrodeck. When her father found out, he kicked her out of the castle. The daughter spent the rest of her life living in a cave in the side of a gigantic rock (the Dasenstein) that sits in the middle of one of the vineyards. As the woman grew older, her nose grew longer, her face became very wrinkled and the locals called her the Hex vom Dasenstein. Pinot Noir is Baden’s most widely cultivated red varietal. Principe Strozzi Vernaccia di San Gimignano 2011

Italy’s distinctively dry, refreshing Vernaccia grape has been grown in San Gimignano since the 1200s. Today, it makes some of Tuscany’s most mouthwatering, modern-style whites. If you haven’t tried one yet, this beauty is an excellent introduction to the style. In fact, it’s fit for a king (or rather, a prince)

Crafted by the legendary Franco Bernabei for Prince Girolamo Strozzi (head of one of Italy’s most renowned families), this tongue-tingling 2011 is the exciting follow-up to a previous vintage that Wine Spectator rated 90 Points (“a wonderful Vernaccia”). As for Franco he’s something of an Italian winemaking superstar, known for his $100+ status wines, like the famed Fontodi Flaccianello.

The wine was awarded 90 points from top critics The Wine Gang: “Creamy, citrus fruit and a nice hint of white pepper spice, together with magnolia floral characters, the nose is complex enough and the palate doesn’t let it down either, with a good depth and length to the fruit classy Tuscan stuff.”

Couple all of this with Prince Strozzi’s illustrious heritage, and you’ll have quite a bit to discuss over dinner (we’d recommend grilled calamari or Tuscan seafood stew)

Pont du Diable (“Devil’s Bridge”) is named after 14th-century Pont Valentre, which took so long to build that the master stone mason was allegedly lured into a pact with the devil to ensure its completion. Five centuries later, some masons took their revenge by making a sculpture of the devil in one of the bridge’s towers, thereby imprisoning him.

Malbec too has been tamed over the centuries. This deep purple gem bursts with devilishly delicious spiced plum, blackberry and raspberry. 20% is aged in oak for extra depth. Chateau Bourdicotte Bordeaux Superieur 2009 France

Bordeaux “Supérieur” is a quality step-up from “regular” Bordeaux. Or, in the case of this gold medalist (Concours de Bordeaux), a giant leap. As you’ll taste, the talented team at Château Bourdicotte knew just how to capitalize on 2009, a vintage whose perfect weather and harvest have critics raving. Really raving — “2009 is the best vintage Bordeaux has ever produced,” says Decanter. Top critic Robert Parker calls 2009 “an incredibly exciting vintage of opulence, power and richness.”

A classic mix of firm Cabernet Sauvignon and plummy Merlot, this fine blend also features a dash of Malbec (another Bordeaux variety, famed for its deep color and dark fruit character). Hervé Sabardeil’s super-fresh follow-up to the inaugural vintage of his award-winning Sauvignon Blanc — already following in its predecessor’s footsteps with a gold medal at the prestigious Concours International des Vins à Lyon. Crisp and aromatic, it’s crafted with premium fruit from the seaside region of Gascony.

Top critic Robert Parker has described Hervé’s wines as “awesome bang for your buck.” And it’s no wonder he knows just where to go for the best grapes. A tribute to the famous 19th century poet and wine lover Charles Baudelaire, this gold-medal gem was made with fruit from some of Hervé’s favorite vineyards. Altos de la Guardia Rioja Blanco 2011 Spain

His ripe white Rioja (from the region’s officially “excellent” 2011vintage) already has two golds, one from the Challenge International du Vin 2012 and the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2012. What a treat for fans of Spanish wines. Here’s what leading UK critics The Wine Gang had to say:

“With a label as pretty as its floral nose, there’s a fine tone of creaminess also coming through on this well-managed blend of 65% Viura and 35% Malvasia. A really confident and chewy texture gives it plenty of oomph in structure but the flavors are still delicately respected, this would be a fine match with a robust chicken salad.”

Intensely aromatic Sauvignon Blanc is at its most thrilling in Marlborough, New Zealand, where you’ll find a mouthwatering, hugely aromatic style — “one of the world’s great flavor-for-money whites,” says Wine Spectator. And Sunday Bay — a gold-medal winner at the 2012 Decanter World Wine Awards is your classic example.

We’d love to able to tell you the name of the cellar that makes this stunner … top critic Oz Clarke raves about them. And, their Sauvignon Blanc is a classic (that normally sells for a lot more). It brims with stone fruit and guava, plus vibrant lime and gooseberry notes.
